INTRODUCTION

Jelena Salmi bw

I am an anthropologist interested in questions of displacement, development, mobility, and the human-environment nexus. I am currently working as a postdoctoral researcher in the project Sustainable Livelihoods and Politics at the Margins: Environmental Displacement in South Asia at the University of Helsinki. During my ongoing ethnographic fieldwork in Mumbai in 2019–2020, I am affiliated with the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences Calcutta (CSSSC).

Before joining the University of Helsinki, I worked as a doctoral student of Ethnology and Anthropology at the University of Jyväskylä. My doctoral thesis explored relations between the state and resettled slum-dwellers in the context of large-scale urban development projects in Ahmedabad, India. I defended my thesis in May 2019.

In 2015–2016, I was affiliated with CEPT University while conducting ethnographic fieldwork in a slum resettlement site in Ahmedabad.

Apart from my academic activities, I work as a freelance graphic designer and enjoy painting, studying languages, and practicing yoga.
